Access to quality healthcare remains a challenge for those residing in rural areas across the U.S. Many rural communities are geographically isolated, and medically underserved. Identifying community needs is the first step in designing strategies to bridge the gap in rural healthcare delivery. In this presentation, a rural healthcare model recently implemented in Scotland will be introduced. This model uses a systematic approach to plan and deliver healthcare services. Focus is placed on design, delivery and evaluation of services that include practice, education, research, leadership, recruitment and retention efforts. Rural regions where this model can be implemented in Delaware will be discussed, in addition to several translational research opportunities aimed at advancing rural health care delivery in the state. An overview of funding mechanisms, and potential rural partners that will inform research activities will be provided.
